Harley’s Top 11 Albums of 2017

December 31, 2017

It’s that time of year. That time for boundless opinions of what was best about 2017. Does it matter what I think? Not really, but it gives some closure to another 365. I’ve waited until the last day of the year to make my biases known and here they are. Turn it up to 11.

There were some really outstanding efforts in 2017, but they all can’t be the best album of the year or even break into the top tier. There are some that may continue to grow and find their way up the ladder, but as of now, the next several albums didn’t quite make my list:

Need Hegaiamos
Solitary The Diseased Heart of Society
Warbringer Woe to the Vanquished
EvocationThe Shadow Archetype
CommunicWhere Echoes Gather
PowerTripNightmare Logic
KreatorGods of Violence
MastodonEmperor of Sands

11. Iris Divine The Static and the Noise
10. HelkerFiresoul
9. DivinityThe Immortalist
8. ExpanderEndless Computer
7. EnslavedE
6. VoyagerGhost Mile
5. OverkillThe Grinding Wheel
4. WitherfallNocturnes and Requiems
3. WintersunThe Forest Seasons
2. EnsiferumTwo Paths
1. ByzantineThe Cicada Tree

Top song:
Swing of the AxePowerTrip This may not be the most technical or heavy song this year, but it’s my favorite one.

The art for an album may not always represent the same level of quality of music behind the painting or photo. Some that I considered to be superior this year were:

Orm – Self Titled
VoyagerGhost Mile
SepulturaMachine Messiah
SkycladForward into the Past

While I never get to go to as many shows as I would like each year, I do manage to get to some. This year’s best performance was Testament. Of course, if I saw them every year it would be the best show.

Witherfall Nocturnes and Requiems

There are also ridiculous quotes from bands and artists every year. I could easily dig something up from Gene Simmons, Lars Ulrich, or Kerry King, but I went for the more obscure. In fact, I kept the names out, as these are just dumb and the speaker must be embarrassed looking back at them now.

In staunch opposition to the strictest adherents of genre-limitations, —BAND NAME— triumphantly challenge the notion that metal bands must play within the rules.  If I recall correctly, there is no organization that ensures Metal bands are limited by genre or “must play within the rules.”  I get it – you’re special and troo.

We are not here to entertain. Those who wish to be entertained can go home. We offer a cathartic experience of pain without which no man-made creation can be made.”  Yes, you are here to entertain.

I always hate this category, but there’s no avoiding that some bands and artists just let us down:

Bloodbound War of Dragons

Surprise of 2017

That’s it for now.  Check out WLM in 2018 for some – hopefully – expanded coverage and plenty of reviews.

I hear the sound in a Metal way.
