WLM Reviews: Destruction – Thrash Anthems II

December 3, 2017

I’ve always been partial to Kreator when it comes to German Thrash. I was on board with Destruction in the early years, but they didn’t really hold my attention over the years like their contemporaries. I think they have it now though with these re-recordings of older material.

Thrash Anthems II is – obviously – the second go round of studio versions of Destruction’s previously released songs. While I can’t say I’m overly familiar with the original versions of these tunes, the rehashing is pretty well done. Certainly the production values have increased resulting in a punchier sound. Everything is clear and well put together maintaining a Thrash Metal ethic with razor sharp guitars, a satisfying bottom, and crisp sounding drums. Do-overs aren’t usually very appealing, but I suppose it helps in this case having little connection with these songs.

It almost seems that Thrash Anthems II is an almost “best of” part two. There are definitely some stand out tracks here, perhaps made more enjoyable with the new take on them. The opener Confused Mind is one of those no-holds-barred ram-it-down-your-throat thrashers that is unrelentingly powerful. Maybe I didn’t give Destruction their proper due all these years.

Although Frontbeast isn’t necessarily a classic, here it proves to be a well done track. Clocking in at just 2 minutes, the track flies by with simple riffs and great gruff vocals from Schmier. United By Hatred comes to mind as one that caught my attention early on. Ripping You Off Blind may not be the best song ever, but I’m digging this version and Destruction really nails it.

Check out this cool video for United By Hatred:

So now I feel a bit more connected with Destruction, though I still doubt they will rocket to the top choice when it comes to Teutonic Thrash. Nevertheless, Thrash Anthems II is a nice revisit or maybe even intro to the band through some of their more classic material.
