In my eyes, this group was the fastest rising group to be well noticed out of any of the metalcore acts here on Metalcore Mondays. With that in mind, their journey is also one of the tumultuous ones. When I say tumultuous, a number of things come into play such as the amount of members leaving to members coming back to medical issues plaguing their career and more.
Originally formed with members of various groups such as Attack Attack!, A Static Lullaby, Odd Project and Lower Definition, Of Mice & Men’s 2009 debut and early years were interestingly successful. These guys got noticed thanks to MySpace during those days after hitting one-million plays on their playlist page and after recording a cover of a Lady Gaga track, that is where they really got their wheels cranking. Sadly the group had to let one of their own go for the benefit of the band and their self-titled debut album was leaked earlier than anticipated online.
Rough times ahead came to the band the next few years with lead man Austin Carlile having to have heart surgery performed, sitting out on a major tour then eventually being kicked out by the band. Eventually, another member was let go as well as the rockstar lifestyle caught up to him fast from dealing with alcoholism, depression, things that life on the road plagues many unfortunately. Carlile returned to the group after the release of their second album after requesting he join the group again.
The group’s third album also came with new blood as bassist and clean singer Aaron Pauley joined the group’s ranks and from then on, the group’s overall career seemed to take on a much needed stable constant. Of course with touring underway, the touring portion of their career’s saw them touring with other fellow metalcore acts like Bring Me The Horizon, Sylosis, Beartooth, Linkin Park and more.
Currently, the status of the group is in question as on again off again lead man Carlile, decided to leave the group in his own terms in order to get his life together again in addition to moving internationally to Costa Rica. The group has also been known to branch out in musical definition with other albums taking on for example, a post-hardcore sound, for those who may question why they are here. For those who also wonder about the name of the band, yes in fact their name does come from the John Steinbeck novel of the same name. Stay Metal \m/
