After a year of deciding who should be in the final bracket of the Lords of the Stage Tournament we have reached the “Sadistic 16.” Two bands from every genre you thought worthy to fight it out for the crown of favorite live heavy metal band. These 16 were picked by you and now it’s time to let the genres battle it out.
The Lords of the Stage started over a year ago. Our readers started chiming in right away and with the staggering numbers of suggestions for the best live metal band we quickly realized a 16 team tournament would not be sufficient. Metal is known for its multiple genres and subgenres, so we had to start there. First you voted for the 8 genres known for their live performances. After a series of 8 band tournaments within those genres, you voted two bands to move to the final bracket to name the Lords of the Stage.
Here is the genre mini-brackets to decide the “Sadistic 16”:
Now all the bands have been picked and the bracket is set:
Let’s get on with the battle: Cannibal Corpse (Death) vs TYR (Folk).
FOUNDED: Cannibal Corpse was founded in 1988 with TYR coming along a decade later.
INSTRUMENTS: Both bands stick to the basics of metal: bass, vocals, drums, and guitars. TYR does incorporate some keyboards, but not a lot of the traditional folk instruments you would expect.
FACTS: Cannibal Corpse is the highest selling Death metal band of all time. TYR draws their name from a Norse God and most of their lyrics fall in the realm of Viking lore.
OPINION: On first inspection Cannibal Corpse would be heavily favored to win this match-up. The wildcare here is the fans. The Folk metal bracket has the biggest voter turnouts so this could be an upset in the making.
