Raven

Godfathers of Thrash Do It Again!

Raven New Album Who are the Godfather's of Thrash? Well that's easy: RAVEN! They are associated with the New Wave of British Metal, but in all truth I feel they more or less cemented Thrash Metal as a true form of music. They have been credited with being major influences on the likes of Metallica and Anthrax. The first major Thrash Tour in the North America was actually Raven and Metallica so if you don't know who Raven is you must check them out. With all these credentials how could someone not know who they are, they were victims of their own success. Those great bands that consider Raven an influence went on to become household names while Raven at times was content with their major fan base in Europe.

But that is all in the past. Brothers Mark (Guitar) & John (Vocals & Bass) Gallagher, along with Drummer Joe Hasselvander have come out with a beauty in "Walk Through Fire". The album was released through Metal Blade records so we don't want to hear any excuses about not being able to pick up your own copy.

The first two songs I would check out are "Attitude" and "Breaking You Down." They are very easy listening Metal, but easy listening for Raven is in your face Metal for others. John hits some very high notes with aggressive lyrics that he is known for and Joe's drum work on "Attitude" is incredible.

The song over to the side "Under the Radar" kind of rips your head off and makes you take notice that old dogs can learn new tricks. Another song similar is the title track "Walk Through Fire," although this song will take you back to the days of old school Raven its still has that my head is going to fall off from the banging feel.

Raven has always been known for crazy lyrics and songs like "Against the Grain" don't disappoint the hard cores, but if you really want to hear something different from the band check out "Bulldozer." It has a very different beat then Thrash but is mixed so well with the instruments that you can't help but understand the talent of these three guys.

All and all the album is great and it would be nice to see the guys take their rightful place among Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth. Even if they don't we as fans should pay proper respect for the road they paved and support them with our horns in the air.
