Primal Fear - 16.6 Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

Primal Fear New Album

This metal blog and review is going to be done a little different, just to shake things up! Vince & I both are reviewing this band and I'm glad we both did b/c he had some great feedback and enjoyed the music as well.

Lets start at the beginning with their album art work, that's great! (the pic above) Vince commented that we had one of those trying to get in to the bird feeder every day. Of course it doesn't look exactly the same, ours is a crow, and it doesn't look quite that scary or kewl. If I saw one of those on my deck I think I would shit my pants and then run for my life cuz its not going to be there to sell AVON!

Next, the meat and potatoes of the album.we need to say "Wow". We were blown away with the strong vocals and the many different styles of guitar play and speaking of vocals, you never knew what you were going to get from one song to the next. More on that further down. These guys have been around since 1997 and are from Germany, however had a few changes to their band and one of them is a Canadian! Randy Black is his name and kicks some major beats. You guessed it, he's the drummer.

Ralf is the lead singer out of 3 vocals and let me tell you as we sat reviewing, Vince would all of a sudden say what musician he was sounding like at the time and there was one song that Ralf changed it up a few times! For an example we heard the voice of Iron Maiden and then right to Judas Priest and then heard a Megadeth voice in "Kiss of Death". Then another had Queensryche and then Vince said "that sounds like James Hetfield" in another. This was unique and very interesting as it kept us guessing the whole time what Ralf was going to come up with next. We were impressed and it was almost like playing a trivia game lol. I challenge you to see how many voices and music styles you can come up with from listening to their variety of songs! Maybe we missed some.

We can't forget about Henny (guitar/vocals), Magnus(guitars) and Mat (bass & vocals) these boys know how to play! They seem to put a new spin on the guitar/bass work and pull off an awesome album, yet again.

Vince likes the deeper heavier sounds than some of the lighter metal sounds in their songs and I agree with him, however I find the talent equally awesome b/c it gives you the heavy and light mixture. Some days I'm metal heavy and some days I'm metal light, I sound like a feminine product commercial lol. But you must know what I mean. Moods change and for myself I can go from 3DG one day to Disturbed the next and if I'm feeling a little black I'll watch a Goatwhore video. So to give you an idea of a lighter side (besides ballads, one such as Hands of Time) I think "Torn" would be one example then they throw a medium heavy in there called "Smith and Wesson" and then you have "Soar" which is heavier yet. The song 16.6 is on the heavier side and then you get this song Riding the Eagle where the drums are going mega fast and the singing is slower, now that's something to check out. It's like a light metal thrash mix - different. Then even more different you get this Ali Babba dessert sound freaking beginning to the song "Black Rain" but love the song! Ok you know what, you just have to check it out lol

Wow, the drums & guitar! How fast can you play? (Riding the Eagle song – being one for example mentioned above) We've played their myspace music over and over and then finally got their new CD here last week. So back to www.myspace.com/primalfearofficial if you listen to Riding the Eagle and the music kicks in, see if you can keep up with the drums & guitar speed. Shit. If you're playing any number of songs at that speed, you have to be amazing. Vince really liked "Kill Bound" and you should have seen the look on my face when I heard the beginning to "Metal is Forever" Vince laughed at me but we both really like that song and catch ourselves singing Metal is forevahhhh forevahhh, forevahhh out of the blue. Now while you're there you can't leave without checking out the video for 16.6 Six times dead. There's a lot of fire and a bunch of shots of dead birds (bones), its awesome!! There's some great metal guitar in there, chuga, chug, chug. This is from their most recent album 16.6 Before the Devil Knows You're Dead and they are actually on tour now! They are touring the US starting this week, May 20th (see dates below) and there were a couple of dates in Canada – Quebec May 23 and Toronto May 24. We wish we were able to cover this one b/c I know Vince and I would really enjoy it. Following are the tour dates and if you're in the area, you should check one out!
