In this article our very own Morgan Storm gives us her impression on only the first listen. Not the typical way to review, but brings up the old adage of “You only get one chance to make a first impression!”
I listened to Disc One of Stratovarius’ new album “Under Flaming Winter Skies.” I did not know this band, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I did, however, read that one of their better known songs is called “Speed of Light,” so that is the one I focused on. I totally understand why they are known for this song!
Stratovarius is a Finnish melodic metal band. “Under Flaming Winter Skies” is a live album, which I usually do not like. However, this song was really good! This is not just a band who tries to live vicariously through Iron Maiden. The guitar work in “Speed of Light” was nothing short of amazing. The drums were pretty complex too. The singer has a good voice, but really it was the guitar work that sold me. Eddie Van Halen, you better watch out! I am sure that the audience would never even see guitarist Matias Kupiainen’s hands move.
I was very surprised to find out that this band has a keyboard player. I am not usually a fan of keyboards in metal music, but in this case, they melded really well with the rest of the instruments. They added to the sound, they did not take away from it.
I’m going to go back and see what else Stratovarius has done and take a listen to some of their albums that are not live!
