Top Ten Tuesday: Guilty by Association?

Heavy Metal Emo Kids

Today we are going to look at the Top Ten things that people in the “mainstream” world associate with Heavy Metal. Some are good, some are bad, and others are what they are! There are many other things and we certainly would love your feedback, but this is what I came up with:

10 – Gothic Clothing/Gothic Attitude – it has always amazed me how people running around in gothic style clothing and saying they hate the world and themselves get lumped in with metal. There are some cases of Gothic Metal, but even we don’t accept Marilyn Mason as the real deal. These people are just EMO with more eyeliner!

9 – Underground Music – considering metal musicians have a very hard time breaking into the mainstream and making a living I guess this is a fair association. My only issue is the way the media continues to show these filthy clubs with everyone stoned and knifing each other. It’s almost as if they feel the “underground” part is literal.

8 – Rage – have you ever noticed in a movie when some guy or girl freaks out and starts “raging” they always play a metal song in the back ground. With all the concerts I have been to in my life the one that displayed the most rage is when we took our daughter to Taylor Swift. Those Country fans have many more rage issues then metal fans.

7 – Boys Club – this one could actually be true because most metal concerts are sausagefests. But by saying metal is a boys club we are taking away from the accomplishments of some great female metal voices and musicians.

Heavy Metal Vince Neil6 – Satan – this one has been done to death and I can’t believe we still hear about it. You would swear every metal musician talks to the Hell Lord before they walk on the stage. Have you ever heard Justin Beiber; that has to be the work of Satan.

5 – Out of Control Frontmen – what can we say? There is a definite history of metal musicians jumping off the deep end and either ending up in jail or dead. Unfortunately I feel this comes with the music. The reason I say that is because many people claim there is a fine line between genius and insanity. For our favorite musicians to do what they do every day takes one or the other.

4 – Partying – this came about with the glam era. The simple fact is they did party too much and live like they were going to die tomorrow. If you read the Motley Crue Bio and all the bands they named you have to believe that this association might be rightly earned.

3 – Guitar Solo – from way back when Iommi put the rubber pads on his fingers and played the low tuned drone they knew what would push metal forward. The guitar solo is a trademark of metal and will forever be linked with the music.

2 – Horns Hand Sign – we live in a day in age where you will see this metal community mainstay thrown at dance concerts. It drives me crazy, but we all know that “the horns” are what binds us as a music community. The symbol may have transcended the music, but it’s still a special moment when you look at a live concert and see the horns blazing for all to see.

Heavy Metal Head Banging

1 – Headbanging – this is one we own and will forever. You’re not going to see many people banging their heads to Carly Rae Jepsen. The fact is, all over this world if you see someone with long hair whipping their head up and down in a manner that will cause spinal cord injury you think of the music we all love.

Metal on,

Martell

The new album is in the works. It’s coming along slower than expected due to summer and some other factors but we are chipping away at it. I was just in Portland, Maine to see Anthrax, Testament and Death Angel: Check out the pics here: http://iframe.ca/wordpress/anthrax-testament-and-death-angel-in-portland-me/
