A Fucking Elephant Split with El Drugstore

Heavy Metal Blogs: A Fucking Elephant El DrugstoreWe all know how much I love a good split. You have two bands, comparable music, and a normally a taste of something new that makes you long for a full length. In the case of A FUCKING ELEPHANT and EL DRUGSTORE we have all three of those and a great look at what I feel will be bands that weave the way into the future of live music.

In 2008 a couple of members from EAST OF THE WALL got together to form the progressive band were looking at today EL DRUGSTORE (www.facebook.com/eldrugstore). Their contribution to the split is a raw energy styled music that as I mentioned above would come across wonderfully on a live stage, and this EP gives the listener the chance to run out and look up tour dates because you are going to want to be at the venue the next time EL DRUGSTORE blows through town.

SCHNURRBART is a great blend of traditional heavy metal and the unusual side of the progressive arts. For some reason I felt the song should be the soundtrack for some strange sci-fi movie that borders on the dark and mysterious. Even with its groovy beat you know there is more going on than what you hear even after a dozen listens.

The other EL DRUGSTORE song on the split I wanted to look at was SLAMCART. At over 8:00 minutes the song is a series of moments in time. For instance, you have moments of fabulous bass work, moments of urgency that fade to the quiet, moments of frantic guitar work. Once you place all of these moments together you have a song that is the best on the split and something you want to hear over and over again.

AFE after the warp:

The other side of the split from A FUCKING ELEPHANT (www.facebook.com/afelephant) features more progressive music, but people seem to tell them the metal they produce is dope soaked and crime inducing. I tend to agree with those critics as a joint could certainly mellow you out because the music energizes you to the point of running out and creating a little mayhem.

Heavy Metal News: A Fuckin Elephant

Our first look at A FUCKING ELEPHANT has to be the brilliant instrumental BLUE CRAB FANTASTIC. The rhythm is very monotonous, which is a great way for the drummer to shine with his use of cymbals. There are points when the songs break out that the guitar and drums are blended so well you can’t really tell its two different instruments. I loved this from start to finish.

FURIOUS E contains some vocals that are more like forced yells than your classic hardcore voice. The song has a groove to it and a very classical progressive feel to it. The spoken word adds some mystery to the track and the chaos at the end makes it unforgettable.

Overall the split was a great experience with two bands I wasn’t necessarily familiar with. Both groups did a great job of displaying what they are best at in their interpretation of progressive. I stick by my original statement, no matter how good this split is the tracks make you want to beat your way down to the club and see these guys live. The raw energy comes across well, but to see them live would be awesome.
