1. Congratulations on Preemptive Strike. You must be very pleased with the response so far? Why do you think this album has struck a chord with people?
Sean: It’s really what everyone wants to hear, great metal with no bullshit.
Charles: Yeah I don’t know what else to add to that really, the response has been amazing for exactly that reason I think, hopefully it keeps up.
2. You started as just two guys jamming. At what point and how did you know it would/should become more than that?
Charles: It really hasn’t become more than that yet, it still is two guys jamming. Our goal was always to release great music, and for us, the most efficient way to do that was with two guys. We always had the intention of making an album though, so I guess even when we first started jamming we knew where we wanted to take this band.
3. This is a self-recorded album. Without an outside critical ear, how do you know when it’s right?
Sean: Well we’re extremely critical of ourselves.
Charles: Yeah we didn’t let anything mediocre slip by, it took us a long time to get it to what we considered perfect. We kind of used each other to bounce what sounded good and bad.
More after the warp:
4. How important was it to keep the thrash element prominent in your music?
Charles: It’s definitely important, at the end of the day we want to write music that we can thrash to, so yeah we keep that in mind.
5. Are there any plans to tour in support of the album?
Sean: Nothing is on the cards right now, but you never know. We don’t really have the resources to do a tour at the moment either.
Charles: A tour would be difficult to pull off, probably more likely will be some shows on the east coast and hopefully a few festivals.
6. Death Metal at times (certainly the present time) has issues with a lot of bands sounding the same, yet Entrenched has a classic style that isn’t redundant. How did you accomplish this?
Charles: We draw from a lot of influences, maybe that’s it, I’m not too sure to be honest we just kind of wrote songs that we enjoyed. We did want to achieve a more old school sound though so maybe in the modern scene it stands out.
7. Where does the “war” sound come from?
Charles: I’ve always been fascinated by war, so it was natural so say why not just write music about it.
8. What is the process for songwriting in the band? Collaborative or each person does their own thing?
Sean: It’s collaborative, I’ll write some riffs then we’ll work on arranging them, what beats to use, stuff like that.
Charles: Yeah we both kind of sit there jam on a few riffs and a few hours later we have a song. We put finishing touches on the songs when we go to record.
9. Why in your opinion doesn’t Entrenched have a record deal?
Charles: Well that is changing very soon, an announcement is coming in a few weeks.
10. Do you feel it’s important for fans to have personal access to artists through social media or should it just be about the music?
Sean: Whatever gets the music out there is fine by me.
Charles: Yeah I mean I don’t mind interacting with fans at all, they essentially make bands what they are so, if they want more access they can have it.
11. If you could design your own BIG 4 of Death Metal, who would be on that stage?
Charles: I’ll add two then Sean can have the other two, I’m thinking of bands that would just be amazing live, Napalm Death and Massacre.
Sean: Carcass and Entombed
