Kip Winger:

Winger's Karma - The Review

Winger Karma

Released: October 2009

To be honest we didn't check this record out because Winger wasn't in the forefront of our minds, but let me tell you after we got a listen it only took once to hook us and put us on the Winger band wagon.

Karma is Kip and the gang's fifth studio effort and in my humble opinion the best piece of work Winger has ever put out. If you and your friends used to sit around and make up lyrics to "Seventeen," trust me when I say you won't have time to do this with Karma.

The opening track "Deal with the Devil" starts everything off and lets you know that Kip means business. It's about breaking into the business. Kip's voice is very strong, but the biggest difference is the heaviness of the album. Were not talking Slayer here, but it certainly is refreshing to hear a classic voice turn to a harder edge of music.

In "Stone Cold Killer" Kip's bass steals the show. Once again its very heavy and will have you singing the chorus for a few days afterwards.

"Big World Away" and "Pull Me Under" show great harmonies in the band and allows John Roth to work some guitar magic. I think John is so underrated and you will know what I mean when you hear the ballad "Witness". The guitar solo in this song is something that is a thing of the past, but proves that great solos can still rock the house.

"Feeding Frenzy" (my personal favorite) and "Come a little Closer" show lots of guitar distortion and voice distortion. Not something Kip is known for but it comes off very well. Great fast paced lyrics and once again Roth on guitar is awesome.

"Supernova" and "After all this Time" round out an excellent album with some bass grooves that remind you of the jazz influence and show you how good instrumentally the band is. They are true technicians in their craft and it shows.

This album gets 2 horns out of 2 and I recommend it to anyone that wants real hard rock with true legends on the stage.
