Heavy Metal Blog:

Is Steve Perry Obsolete?
March 11, 2009

Now when you think Journey, you certainly don't think Heavy Metal of course you don't think small Philippine men either, but we'll get to that. You see Journey has done some amazing things, they have been making music for over 30 years, had 7 straight multi-platinum albums from 1978 to 1987, 13 albums reach at least the gold standard and "Don't Stop Believing" is the #1 downloaded song in the history of Itunes with over 2 million hits.

That's a lot of success, but it still begs the question: "What in the hell is Journey doing on a Metal Blog site?" Well in short its because I find Journey's current situation quite funny and I own part of this site. You see the "voice" of Journey has and will always be remembered as Steve Perry. Unless you listen to the new lead singer Arnel Pineda. Sure he doesn't look like Steve Perry, but man oh man does he sound like him. In fact a lot of people who thought no one could replace Perry's high octaves have since done a complete 180 and rocked out with the millions of fans on Journey's latest world tour.

Arnel was found on YouTube doing covers of Journey songs. Journey was struggling at the time with fans not accepting Jeff Soto as the "King of the Power Ballads" so they gave Arnel a shot and he has delivered with a packed world tour and hit album of new material.

I guess people are willing to shut their eyes and dream of their youth when Journey was turned up loud to help get in your girls pants and keep your parents from not hearing the commotion.

If you don't believe me check out the videos and tell us which sounds better or if they just sound the same. Close your eyes, it helps. To Arnel, keep living that dream man and making Journey a truly cultured worldly band. To Steve Perry, I'm sure some the local casino folks will remember "Oh Sherri."
