F*cked Up:

Whats the name: F*cked Up

I heard on (believe it or not) CBC radio that a band who had a name they couldn’t say on the air won a music award. Well, you know I had to check out what it was! The name of the band is F*cked Up. They are a hardcore punk band from Toronto, Ontario. They were on the news because they won a 2009 Polaris Music Prize, worth $20,000. The band members at the awards included Damian “Pink Eyes” Abraham, Josh “Gulag” Zucker, and Jonah “Mr. Jo” Falco.

The band formed and started playing in 2001. Between the years 2004 and 2009, they have released 12 albums (including self-released albums). They really are not my taste in music, but they touched a soft spot with me. They are using their award money to do a benefit album that will go toward raising awareness of the dozens of Aboriginal women who go missing every year. Damian Abraham said in a video aired on www.cbc.ca that the band was doing the album anyway, but now they don’t have to take the cost of doing the album away from the proceeds.

Of course, the band is probably not hurting for money at the moment. In January of 2008, they filed a lawsuit against Rolling Stone Magazine and Camel Cigarettes for including the band name in an advertisement for the tobacco company. They are quoted as saying, “The fact that F*cked Up was mentioned in there wasn't some great coincidence. This isn't a case of subliminal advertising, where we're claiming that there were penises in the shadows — our name is right there. Maybe they thought we were too stupid to know what was going on.”

Nevertheless, it’s nice to see a band take on an issue like the marginalization of Aboriginal women; even if I don’t like their music.
