The act will be none other then Disturbed, the Nu-Metal icons. We Love Metal will be in full effect that day. We will be heading into the city, grabbing a bite to eat and dusting off the devil horns.
This isn't the first time we have seen Disturbed, having seen them last year at Heavy Mtl Fest, but lately Heavy Metal Momma has had us immersed in the Rock goodness that this band represents so needless to say we are jacked.
We have had Disturbed info up all week and hope you have enjoyed it. Its certainly added to the excitement we get before every big name concert. Next week we will give you reviews from each member of the team about the concert. I don't mean pussy set lists and all that shit those other sites do, but a review of what we liked and disliked. This will be We Love Metal giving their opinion on if you should check them out or not. I think I already know the answer to that, but it will be fun to put into words.
Until next week wish us happy Metal and stay Indestructible in this Land of Confusion.
Today's blog is about a heavy metal band that kicks serious ASS! So, shout! Shout!
Let it all out these are the things I can do without, come on I'm talking to you, so come
On! If a band can take a "tears for Fears" song and make it ROCK! Then I think you have
Done something special! I'm not going to ramble on too much about this band today, you'll get enough of that this week on our site! This week is count down to DISTURBED! Looking forward to seeing this band live again at the end of the week!
I love Disturbed!! They are in my top fav bands. I admit I don't know everything about them and only started (seriously) getting in to their music since early last year but man o man I can't stop listening to them now! So when I was reading up on them to learn more, I hit Wiki, who wouldn't? And I looked at the first line "Disturbed is an American rock band from Chicago," Categorized as just Rock, I think NOT! They are beyond anyone in that category. Theres the hard rock/metal sound, the raunchy rawness, monkey sounds and a lot of *Augh Augh* sounds…you don't get that with rock. Now, yes, they do categorize themselves on their myspace page as Metal/Rock/Other…that sounds better. Disturbed flows through my body and I actually feel high when getting in to their music.
When I saw my very first Disturbed video (PRAYER) on Canadian TV Music Channel called Much Music in 2002, the first impression was 'holy fk that guy looks a little scary (David with the hooks in his face) …but I like the music'. Now I find the image very kewl and he's sexy as hell. Did you know that David triple majored in Business Administration, Philosophy, and Political Science at Loyola University Chicago and seriously thought about going to law school before joining the band?? Could you imagine if he became a lawyer instead of lead singer of Disturbed. Wow. The choices we make in life and where the roads take us.
Unfortunately David has had a recent breakup, however, this will help with their next album. He says it will be as dark if not darker than Indistructable. As you probably know one of the songs hit home for him being Inside the fire where there was a suicide he had to deal with years ago. When he was 16 he found love with an 18yr old university freshman. He found out she was a heroine addict, he wanted her to layoff it and she didn't. They broke up, they met again at Spring break the following year but he left early. The next day he got a call that she had an overdose and that in the ambulance she kept saying she wanted him with her. …do you notice simularities from the video now? David had nightmares for years and finally got over them until working on the video, they came back :( poor guy. One thing I wanted to note though, after his ex-girlfriend's death he too began drugs and went in to a downward spiral but had an epiphany at the age of 18 where he stopped drugs cold turkey and changed his path in life. If he wouldn't have had that epiphany, gotten an education, wanted to take law but decided another path, we may never have gotten the opportunity to listen and feel David's past, the events in his life, for many people to be able to relate to many of his lyrics and learn more about an amazing individual.
David, you fking rock! Thanks for changing your path. Things happen for a reason, sometimes they are quite unfortunate to have happen but we can learn from them, we grow and sometimes have epiphanies.
The video I have chosen is from the mentioned above, Inside the Fire. It contains very sensitive and mature content. Viewer discretion is advised. I have made it very clear on this site about my feelings pertaining to Heavy Metal Bands doing pop covers, but I have also mentioned in past blogs that some of these covers are okay. In fact the cover we are going to talk about for Disturbed Week is kick ass. I imagine it makes Phil Collins ears bleed, but man its awesome.
Phil Collins both solo and with Genesis has some very epic long lasting songs that will be sung by generations. Lately hip-hop artists have taken to not only using Collins back beats, but his lyrics. That's a good sign of a generational artist. But this is a heavy metal site and Phil Collins isn't exactly mentioned in the names of Ozzy, Dio, or Kevin Dubrow. In fact if you were at a Heavy Metal concert with a Genesis shirt on you better get ready for an ass kicking.
Anyway a few years ago our band of the week Disturbed covered Land of Confusion and it instantly caught on with the Heavy Metal fans and even drug in some of the old Phil Collins fans. The song is a great timepiece about the state of the world and how it really is going nowhere quick. It's a universal message that needs to be heard and if Disturbed can cover it in a genre that I enjoy listening to then more power to them. As artists of different genres learn to work together to get the language of music and its lessons to the masses we will all understand each other a little better. Be it Devil Horns or Keyboards, music is music. We all enjoy it different, but we all learn something from it.
You will find on YouTube and below both versions of the song. Give them a listen to, their both great songs with universal appeal, but lets face the facts, the Disturbed version is so much better!
